Together we are NESTA

The end of the school year is upon us, and as we take a day to celebrate the establishment of our dynamic Hong Kong, I would like to share with you some reflections and hopes.

2019-20 was a complex and eventful year, and this new normal may be with us for the foreseeable future. Disruptions in our school life and schedules are always difficult to accept, but the way that NETs all over Hong Kong have risen to that challenge with professionalism and flexibility is incredible. These are not ordinary times, but NETs’ commitment to teaching and students has always been extraordinary.

Sadly, we also look back at a number of NETs who have passed away this year. The fact that years after these NETs have left the scheme and are still remembered for their acts of service and dedication speaks volumes to their quality of character and commitment. May we all strive to live a life worth remembering.

I would also like to extend my greatest thanks and support to the incoming NESTA Executive Committee. Established in 1998, NESTA has a long and proven history of supporting NETs. This year, seven NETs will take up volunteer executive positions and work hard to continue to provide NETs with both professional and personal support such as:

– advice and consulting on workplace or contractual issues;
liaison meetings with the EDB where your voice and concerns are represented;
professional development opportunities to broaden our skills; and
social activities to network with other NETs.

NESTA will be hosting an end-of-year social on Friday 31 July, a NET Induction and Welcome drinks in August, a GM in September, and an EDB liaison meeting in November. We look forward to seeing you at our events. NESTA and the NESTA forum are free to join for all primary and secondary NETs in Hong Kong. Knowledge is power; together we are better.

Finally, I want to say how honored I am to be assuming the Chair of NESTA. I am proud to work with the new Executive team to support NETs, and eager to highlight the tremendous value that the NET Scheme brings to Hong Kong both socially and economically. My sincere appreciation goes to the outgoing Chair and his team for their service to NESTA.

So, it is with hope and optimism that we say farewell to the 2019-20 academic year and welcome in 2020-21!
