NESTA 2021-22 Primary and Secondary Student Competitions

This year NESTA is proud to offer three (or four) different student competitions centered on one unified theme and targeted at a wide range of abilities. In addition, NESTA will introduce an updated mode of submission and judging to reduce paperwork for the NET, increase student engagement, and lower environmental impact. We hope everyone will join this easy and topical competition and help us celebrate our students’ talents.

A Unified Theme
Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) charging
Municipal solid waste charging (MSW charging) has been deliberated and discussed in Hong Kong for many years. In August 2021, LEGCO passed a Bill authorizing the charging, and putting the program into motion.

All waste from residential and non-residential areas (including the commercial and industrial sectors) will be charged based on the quantity of waste. In other words, generating more waste will result in higher disposal charges.

Charging by ‘designated garbage bags’
Hong Kong residents will have to purchase and use pre-paid ‘designated garbage bags’ to wrap their waste properly before disposal.
